The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Tuesday announced that it will contest 20 out of 40 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry while its allies including Congress, Left parties and MDMK will contest in the rest of the seats.

“We have successfully completed seat-sharing pacts with our allies. We have allotted 10 seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to Congress and another 10 seats to other alliance partners. So, we will contest in the rest of the 20 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls,” DMK president MK Stalin said after signing the poll pact with Vaiko’s MDMK at the party headquarters.

DMK has allotted 10 seats, including a lone seat in Puducherry to Congress, while CPI(M), CPI and Dalit party Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi get two seats each. Vaiko’s MDMK has been allotted one Lok Sabha and a Rajya Sabha seat while IUML and two other caste outfits will contest from one LS seat each.

Stalin said that from March 7, his party’s seat-sharing panel, headed by senior leader S Duraimurugan will hold talks with alliance partners to the identification of the seats. When asked about the status of another ally Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, he said that his party could not accommodate MMK in the alliance by allotting a seat.

DMK has also asked some of its allies to contest from its poll symbol “rising sun”. “We have suggested to VCK and MDMK to consider contesting from our symbol,” Stalin said. Two other caste outfits – Indiya Jananayaga Katchi and Kongunadu Desiya Makkal Katchi – have announced that they will contest from the DMK symbol.

Even as the DMK finalised its seat-sharing pact with the allies, the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, which had a head start by signing the deal with the BJP and the PMK finding to finalise the talks with actor-politician Vijayakanth’s DMDK. On February 19, AIADMK allotted five LS seats to BJP and seven LS seats and a Rajya Sabha seat to PMK. But the talks with the DMDK seems to be dragging with the actor-politician insisting on allotting seats on par with PMK. AIADMK, sources said, is willing to offer a maximum of four LS seats. Sources added that they were not sure whether the DMDK would join the alliance and take part in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Chennai on Wednesday where leaders of the alliance parties will participate.
