DMK had called for an all-party meeting on Monday is likely to announce a major protest against NEET. They will also seek the resignation of Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami, Health Minister Dr C Vijayabaskar and Health Secretary Dr J Radhakrishnan for misleading the state board students with false promises on NEET.

Nirmala Sitharaman's elevation as a Cabinet Minister for Defence comes at a time when she has been facing criticism from opposition parties and student groups for her role in the NEET issue in Tamil Nadu following the suicide of Dalit girl S Anitha.

Anitha, who led an unsuccessful campaign against NEET in the Supreme Court, ended her life on Friday.

Sitharaman played a key role on NEET issue. On August 13, she had announced the Centre's decision to provide a one-year exemption to Tamil Nadu from NEET if the state comes out with an ordinance in this regard. However, the Centre later opposed it in the SC.

DMK Rajya Sabha MP TKS Elangovan said that Sitharaman must own responsibility for making a false promise and should resign from the Cabinet. "When Sitharaman as a union minister made an announcement on exempting the state from NEET for a year, everybody believed her, but that did not happen. She must own responsibility and resign from the cabinet," he told DNA.

Seeking their resignation, DMK working president MK Stalin said that his party would not rest until the education was transferred back to the state list from the concurrent list to bring a permanent end to the NEET.

Unfazed by the criticism, Sitharaman told a Tamil news channel that she was saddened by the death of Anitha and asked political parties not to indulge in the blame game over the death. She said that she did whatever she could after giving a word that the centre will support if the state brings an ordinance seeking a one-year exemption from NEET. "For some reasons that everyone knew we did not have the ordinance before the Court order came," she said. She also felt that there was nothing wrong in the Centre's counsel stating the factual situation that one state alone could not be given exemption from the NEET when the Supreme Court asked why Tamil Nadu alone being given exclusive exemption. "It does not mean we opposed it. The centre tried to cooperate and I can explain it step by step," she said, pointing out that everybody from Chief Minster to officials were kept in the loop.
