Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi was declared critical a day after his family and the Kauvery Hospital declared that his condition was stable.

On Sunday evening, after he appeared to be recovering well, Karunanidhi became critical once again. His family members then began gathering at Chennai’s Kauvery hospital at around 9pm. "There was a transient setback in the clinical condition of Dr M Karunanidhi, DMK President. With active medical support, his vital signs are normalising. He continues to be closely monitored and treated by the panel of expert doctors," the hospital said in a statement

DMK leader and former Union Minister A Raja said that after the setback, the DMK chief's health was improving. He has asked DMK cadre not to believe  believe rumours.

Earlier in the day, the DMK released the photograph of ailing party president M Karunanidhi for the first time since hospitalisation two days ago when vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu and Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit visited him at the Kauvery hospital.

In the photograph, Naidu along with Governor was looking at the 94-year-old DMK leader who appears to be sleeping. The vital parameters reading in the photo showed Karunanidhi's health is good. His heart beat per minute stood at 94 against the normal reading between 60 and 100 while his respiration rate stood at 30 breaths per minute against the average for people over the age of 80 is between 10 and 30. Karunanidhi's blood oxygen level is at 97 millimetres of mercury against the normal value of 95 and 100.

Karunanidhi's photograph along with health indicators went viral in social media with many recalling his demand to the Tamil Nadu government to release photo of the then chief minister J Jayalalitha when she was hospitalised to put to rest speculation over her health condition.

Karunanidhi, who is being treated for fever due to a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), was rushed to Kauvery Hospital here after his blood pressure dipped on Friday midnight.

The hospital issued a health bulletin stating that the DMK leader's blood pressure has been stabilised. Karunanidhi, who is admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) continues to be treated by a panel of expert doctors, it said.

Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and other leaders visited the hospital to enquire about the ailing leader's health and met his children MK Stalin and Kanimozhi on Saturday.

"His condition is improving. Each one of us is praying for his speedy recovery. I'm sure he will return home in a few days," Azad said. He was accompanied by AICC Tamil Nadu in-charge Mukul Wasnik and TN Congress Committee president Su Thirunavukkarasar.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami told reporters in Salem that his government will provide all medical help to DMK leader Karunanidhi if needed. "He is a five-time chief minister and a sitting MLA. We will provide all help if needed," he said, responding to a query on whether the government has offered to provide any medical help.
