Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on ailing DMK president M Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence, DMK on Monday asked its district units except eight rain-affected districts to hold a massive demonstration to observe November 8 – the first anniversary of demonetization as 'Black Day'.

"Condemning the BJP government at the Centre, all the DMK cadres wearing black clothes would take part in the demonstration to be led by the district secretaries at their respective district headquarters on November 8 marking the first anniversary of the demonetization," the DMK statement said.

The party, however, exempted the eight districts that are hit by the heavy rains and floods to allow the cadres to carry out the relief works. The timing of the party announcement has raised several eyebrows as it comes hours after Modi visited the party chief. In fact, Modi's visit to Karunanidhi's Gopalapuram home was announced at the last minute.

Modi who was in the city to attend a Tamil daily's 75 years celebration made a brief visit to inquire about the health condition of the-93-year-old Karunanidhi who is recovering from a long illness and recently made his first public appearance in months at an exhibition. Karunanidhi's son and party working president MK Stalin who cut short his foreign trip to receive Modi along with his sister Kanimozhi. The leaders of both DMK and BJP described the Prime Minister's visit as a courtesy call even though the political circles abuzz with speculation.

Prime Minister enquired about the health of Karunanidhi and invited him to his residence in New Delhi, said BJP's Tamil Nadu unit president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan.

Karunanidhi presented Modi a copy of Kuraloviam, his commentary on Thirukkural, and the 75th-anniversary souvenir of the DMK organ Murasoli. The Prime Minister met Karunanidhi's wife Dayalu Ammal and enquired about her health.

The DMK is an ally of the Congress in Tamil Nadu and has been actively working with the opposition parties at the national level to counter the BJP government at the Centre. The DMK hoping to return to power in the state while the BJP wants the AIADMK which it considers as its natural ally, to complete its full term.
