DMDK's Vijayakanth promises one week Pongal holiday in his poll manifesto

On Sunday, DMDK founder Vijayakanth released the second part of his party’s poll manifesto. A report in The New Indian Express states that he also earnestly asked people to give the DMDK a chance to form the government. He was quoted as saying, "I promise that our government will do that which could not be done in the last six decades."

In the second part of the poll manifesto, there were 16 promises listed out. It stated that within four months of being elected in power, the DMDK would eradicate the seemai karuvelam (Prosopis juliflora) weed was affected crops in Tamil Nadu.

According to the manifesto, Pongal would be celebrated for a week and a public holiday would be given to all schools and government offices. The party said it would be celebrated as a cultural festival with traditional sports and food made available around the state.

The party also said that sand quarrying taking place on river beds would be stopped and sand would be ‘manufactured’ and sold, according to the manifesto, added the report. There will also be four separate welfare boards which would be set up to protect the interests of non-resident Tamils who are working abroad and in other states in India as well as people from other states and countries living in Tamil Nadu.

Students who take loans from banks to study will also be given jobs in four months after finishing their studies, the manifesto promised.
