US Ambassador to India Ken Juster on Tuesday wished the people of India a Happy Diwali.

Juster, who became the US Ambassador, earlier this year, said he was excited to celebrate his first Diwali. He even signed out with a 'Shubh Deepavali'.

The festival of light, Diwali, is finally here. The five-day celebrations began yesterday with Dhanteras and will culminate with Bhai Duj.

'Dhan' literally means wealth while 'Teras' means thirteenth. This festival is observed on the thirteenth lunar day of the Krishna Paksha as per the Hindu calendar and it falls between October and November. As per legends, on this day, Goddess Lakshmi came out of the ocean during the churning of the Milky Sea. Hence, Goddess Lakshmi, along with Lord Kubera who is the God of wealth, is worshipped on the auspicious day of Trayodashi.

While the day of diyas, Deepawali, will be celebrated on November 7, the festive mood has already arrived. You can see beautiful decorative lanterns, lights and decorations all around you.  People are in full zest and zeal to celebrate the festival with much fanfare.

On Saturday, the widows of Vrindavan gathered at the historic Gopinath temple, lit colourful earthen lamps, decorated intricate Rangolis and sang hymns as they celebrated a 'green Diwali' to fight against rising air pollution.

This year, the Supreme Court has banned harmful chemical-laden crackers and also restricted the time period during which firecrackers can be burst. Besides, the government and some non-governmental organisations have also been pushing for pollution-free Diwali.
