On day two of the CPM's brainstorming session, more divergent views surfaced as the party discussed both political tactical lines-- one adopted by the politburo and the other placed before it by senior party leader Sitaram Yechury.

Yechury's five-page report placed before the CPM central committee reflects a view different from the politburo's which is of the view that it would have to review the party strategy adopted during the 1978 Congress in Jalandhar on forming a front of Left and democratic parties. Yechury is understood to be critical not of the Jalandhar Congress line but its implementation, blaming party general secretary Prakash Karat for it.

A party leader said such differences in opinion were not unprecedented and after discussions on both documents the party will unanimously accept the line which gets the majority support. The leader said the central committee meeting was spread over four days so that more members could participate in the debate and make suggestions on how to reverse the party's repeated electoral debacles.

Some suggestions may be incorporated in the draft report and then it will be sent to state units. However, the differences within the party on the political tactical line are now likely to reflect in the draft to be placed before the CPM Congress to be held next year in Visakhapatnam.

Concerned over its marginalisation, the CPM politburo had adopted a draft report which sought a review of its political tactical line. A party leader said the party's political tactics also depended on the situation at a particular time. In other words, the party would have to take a call depending on the scenario.

The BJP is now trying to capture the Left space in West Bengal, projecting itself as the alternative to Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress. The BJP managed to win its first assembly seat in the state last month. In Kerala, where the party is yet to open its account, the BJP is trying to make inroads with an aggressive membership drive and attempts to wean away the Hindu votes from the Left.
