Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and Congress leader Digvijaya Singh will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from Bhopal Parliamentary constituency.

This was revealed by a top Congress leader who said that Singh's name has been finalised by Central Election Committee of the party.

Earlier, Digvijaya Singh had said he will fight from wherever Congress president Rahul Gandhi asks him to.

Chief Minister Kamal Nath had suggested Singh contest from a "tough" seat in the upcoming polls.

Bhopal is one of the safest seats for the BJP which has won in every election since 1989. Last Congress leader to win this seat was  KN Pradhan in 1984 when the party had swept the elections across the country following the assassination of Indira Gandhi. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP's Alok Sanjar had defeated Congress' PC Sharma by Over 3.7 lakh votes.

On Kamal Nath' suggestion that he should contest from a tough seat, Singh said in a tweet, "To accept challenges is my habit. I won from Raghogarh despite the Janata Party wave in 1977. I am ready to contest the Lok Sabha elections from wherever my leader Rahul Gandhi ji says."

"I'm grateful to Kamal Nath for thinking that I'm competent enough to fight Lok Sabha elections," another tweet by the Congress leader said.

Kamal Nath had on Saturday said if party colleague Digvijaya Singh wants to contest upcoming Lok Sabha polls, he should choose the "toughest seat" in the state.

While Nath did not mention any seat in particular, he said there were "2-3-4 seats" in MP which the Congress had not won in the past "30-35" years.

Singh, a former chief minister and multiple times Lok Sabha MP, is currently a Rajya Sabha member.

"I have requested Digvijaya Singh that if he wants to contest Lok Sabha polls, then he should do so from the toughest seat. There are 2-3-4 seats from where we have not won elections since the last 30-35 years," Nath told reporters.

Congress functionaries said he may have been referring to Bhopal and Indore Lok Sabha seats, both of which have been held by the BJP since 1989.

In Madhya Pradesh, polling will be conducted in four stages during phase four, five, six and seven scheduled on April 29, May 6, May 12 and May 19, respectively.

Madhya Pradesh has a total of 29 Lok Sabha constituencies. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP had won from 27 constituencies while the Congress bagged two seats.
