With two years to go before the general elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has started preparing his party representatives to brace up for the digital world.

Modi has consistently underlined the importance of social media and going digital. On Friday, when he met BJP MPs from six states over breakfast at his residence, he linked its importance to the 2019 general elections.

According to a senior BJP leader, he told them that digital is the new language and mobile the new communicator. And unless they armed themselves with these they would fail in communicate,

In the last of a series of meetings with groups of his party MPs, Modi said that by 2019, digital platforms, which were more transparent, vibrant, and gave immediate feedback, will assume greater importance. He met MPs from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Jharkhand, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Of these states, the BJP has a government only in Jharkhand. In fact in Kerala, the BJP does not have a single elected MP in the Lok Sabha.

The Prime Minister, who himself is active on social media and has 28.5 million followers on Twitter, wanted each MP and other elected representatives to register their presence and development activities on Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp. Through these hour-long morning meetings, Modi has been emphasising on creating awareness about government policies, particularly welfare schemes for the poor. The BJP has recently swept Uttar Pradesh, after an election in which the party had reached out to the economically and socially backward classes.

Sources said he has been trying to make a point that in ensuing elections, social media and mobile phones will be the greatest interface between people and communicators. This was the fifth meeting with BJP MPs from states since last week.
