The Digital India initiative launched by prime minister Narendra Modi on July 1, has brought a boost with Hewlett Packard and Nasscom Foundation joining hands to donate five shipping container based digital classrooms, under the National Digital Literacy Mission (NDLM) program.

This would be India's first portable digital classrooms and will be deployed in Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru and Rajasthan. They will be used to train 6,000 people for free of cost in its first year.

The centres are currently being readied in the vacant shipping containers. Each Centre will be air-conditioned and have a minimum of 15 computers. The 40ft x 9ft container classrooms would be both cloud and internet-enabled.

"They will be parked at location where we can impact the maximum number of undeserved people. We are currently in the process of finalizing the venues. The aim is to digitally empower the community and then move the classrooms to other locations," Shrikant, CEO of Nasscom, told dna.

Once trained, the beneficiaries will be able to send emails, connect on social media, buy from e-commerce websites, and will even learn to use the Internet to avail various online government services.

Eligibility: Anybody who has an Aadhar card and is literate enough to read in his own language (basic literacy) is eligible. The starting age for this is 14 onwards.
Fee: The program is completely free of charge for all beneficiaries.
Course: Covers basic introduction, internet, email and social media, e-governance initiatives, e-commerce and IT security
Duration: Total 20 hours
Launch: All the 5 centres are scheduled for a launch in August.
