Indore’s college students knew it all the time. But it took a heinous crime like gang rape of an 18-year-old to make rest of the city wake up to the existence of restaurants that rent out rooms to youngsters on hourly basis.

Surprisingly, the ignorant lot in the city includes Deputy Inspector General of Police Rakesh Gupta.
“We do not know about such places. There are hundreds of restaurants big and small in Indore.
We can act only on basis of information,” Gupta said when asked about rampant spread of such establishments in and around the city.

“Earlier, when we had come to know about a restaurant named ‘My Mania’ in Annapurna Nagar, we acted swiftly against it and dismantled the whole set up,” he added.

Not only did the DIG express ignorance, he even blamed society for growth of such illicit businesses in the city.

“People should come forward and inform the police about it. If they do not act responsibly, it is difficult to identify such establishments out of hundreds that exist in the city,” he said.

He added: “If this is in knowledge of any police personnel, he will also be brought to the book.  We are not under any political pressure to not to take any action against such establishments (believed to be owned by politically affiliated people).”

“We do not have to form special teams to check this menace as in the case of thefts, burglaries or murders. We will act as and when we are notified,” the top cop added.

Indore city alone has more than four dozen such shady establishments which are known to a lot of college students.

One of the students wishing anonymity said, “It is an open secret. Almost all college-goers know about these places. Many people do not even visit such restaurants because they know these places are not suitable for eating out with a family.”

Sonalee Nagrunde, a professor at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya said, “In early 2000s, internet cafés were also hot spots for such immoral activities. Only after media launched a campaign against the menace, it was curbed. And now too, only media should pull the strings, because this practice has been going on for past five-six years and such businesses cannot operate without the knowledge of police.”
