West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to visit The Netherlands on an invitation from the United Nations (UN) later this month.
She has been invited to deliver a lecture during the UN’s Public Service Day celebrations that is scheduled to take place in The Hague on June 22 and 23. The West Bengal government’s project on the girl child — Kanyashree — and other projects have already garnered international praise. There has been some curiosity among various quarters internationally about the implementation techniques of such public service projects. Mamata is also trying to project different products from her state as international brands.
The 2017 UN Public Service Forum, entitled ‘The Future is Now: Accelerating Public Service Innovation for Agenda 2030’, that will take place in The Hague is being organised by the Government of Netherlands together with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs in honour of United Nations Public Service Day. This international day celebrates public servants’ contribution to sustainable development.
The Bengal CM is likely to highlight the Kanyashree project, which seeks to improve the well-being of girls in rural Bengal. The project is meant specially for economically disadvantaged families. It is aimed primarily at attracting the girl child to stay in the academic process for a longer period of time and learn vocational and technical skills. It also aims at discouraging girls to get married at a tender age in order to reduce the risk of early pregnancy.
It was also decided that the scheme should confer more than just monetary support — it should be a means of financial inclusion and a tool to empower adolescent girls.
