While the Mumbai police themselves have admitted about an anonymous call from Meerut, highly placed sources told dna that the first tip-off was received by a senior Indian Police Service officer from Mumbai at a high-profile party three months ago.
Based on this information, the police arrested three people, including media honcho Indrani Mukerjea.
According to sources, the tip-off came from a high-flying socialite, who has been in the know of things about the Mukerjea family for the last few years. The socialite is believed to have been a known face in the Mumbai and Delhi party circles and was closely associated with the Mukerjeas for a brief time.
Even though the Mumbai police are tight-lipped about his identity, investigators are trying to verify if he was involved in any kind of financial dealings with the accused. The police are looking into why the person remained silent for three years.
According to Mumbai police sources, the reason behind his zeroing in on Indrani is believed to be personal rather than professional rivalry.
Interestingly, what is more intriguing for the Mumbai police is the reason behind the high-flying informer giving away the murder details. "The entire case was busted on a tip-off, but it is important to know that the informer's motive behind leaking the information," said an officer from Mumbai police.
As far as the Meerut caller was concerned, the Mumbai police are already trying to trace the caller.
The Meerut police, however, claimed that they had not been approached by the Mumbai police for any information regarding the mysterious phone call.
