Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency voted in the third phase on April 23. Here's how the candidates fared.

AIUDF's Badruddin Ajmalwon over nearest competitor Abu Tehar Bapari of Congress by 226258 votes

At 4.20 PM,  AIUDF's Badruddin Ajmal is currently leading over nearest competitor Abu Tehar Bapari of Congress by 1.78 lakh votes.

Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency profile:

Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency is the bastion of AIUDF. AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal increased his impressive margin of 1.84 lakh in 2009 to over 2.30 lakh in 2014 to register a handsome win. But five years down the line, there seems to be disillusionment with AIUDF among its core voters, the Bengali speaking Muslims of Lower Assam. Can the perfume king hold on to his seat even if with a lesser margin is the big question in Dhubri.

AIUDF fared poorly in the 2016 Assam assembly election dropping 5 seats to 13. The double whammy was last year's Panchayat election result. Sensing that ground is shifting, AIUDF is contesting from only three seats in Lok Sabha in 2019. These are the seats which they won in 2014. It hoped for an alliance wiith Congress and unilaterally decided to not field candidates in other 11 seats. But Congress is mortified that a possible alliance with AIUDF will completely polarise the election and play into BJP's hand.  Hence just to make a point that it has no truck with AIUDF, Congress has fielded a strong candidate from Dhubri which has greatly angered Badruddin Ajmal.

Congress candidate is Abu Tehar Bapari, two time MLA from Gokolganj. BJP is not contesting and as per seat sharing deal, AGP is fighting for NDA from Dhubri. Its candidate is Javed Islam, who is son of veteran Congress leader from the district Zehirul Islam. Javed hopes to leverage that connection to get the minority votes and is also confident of the BJP voters contribution.

TMC too has fielded a strong candidate in lawyer Nurul Islam Chaudhary, who was with AIUDF previously. Mamata Banerjee has campaigned for Chaudhary and other candidates in Assam. In total, 5 candidates are contesting from Dhubri.

The assembly segments in Dhubri are Mankachar, Salmara South, Dhubri, Gauripur, Golakganj, Bilasipara West, Bilasipara East, Goalpara East, Goalpara West, Jaleswar. With nearly 70% Muslim voters, Dhubri is acid test for Ajmal to prove his political relevance in Assam.
