Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday directed the state health department to increase the number of teachers in government medical college. The move is likely to reduce the workload of doctors currently working in these health facilities.

Fadnavis in his order told the health department to ensure the number of teachers is made available as per the stipulated proportion of beds in each hospital.

The health department has been given a three-month period to provide a detailed report. State minister for health and medical education Girish Mahajan added that he was following up with the implementation.

Currently, the radio of students per hospital beds is supposed to be 1:5 (200 students for 1,000 beds). However, in larger cities the number of beds exceeds the number of students. In Pune’s BJ Medical College, the ratio is 200 students to 1,296 beds, while Nagpur has 200 students to 1,401 beds. In Mumbai, the number is 200 students to 2,895 beds, while in Aurangabad it’s 200 students to 1,177 beds.
