Security has been beefed up in Panchkula and Rohtak districts of Haryana ahead of the quantum of punishment of jailed godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh on Thursday, in the murder case of a journalist. A special CBI court on January 11 convicted Dera Sachcha Sauda chief and three accomplices for criminal conspiracy and murder of Ram Chander Chhatrapati on October 24, 2002.
Hundreds of cops have been deployed across Panchkula to prevent backlash from followers of the self-styled godman once the quantum is pronounced. His disciples went on a rampage in August 2017 when the CBI court convicted him for raping two of his followers. Violence broke out in the satellite town as hundreds of armed men clashed with police.
According to senior Panchkula police officers, security has been heightened across the city, with special focus on the border to prevent miscreants from entering the city. The police have also imposed Section 144 till Thursday while the court premises have been heavily barricaded with heavy police deployment. Sources claimed that family members of the disgraced godman are likely to be present in the court during the sentence.
In Rohtak too, cops are on high alert, with Sunaria jail completely cordoned off. Senior police officers told DNA that the area within 2 kilometres of the jail is out of bounds till Thursday and a two-tier security cover has been put in place.
