A low-pressure area in the southeast Bay of Bengal turned into a depression weather system on Friday and by Saturday evening, it is expected to develop into a cyclonic storm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.

By the time it comes closer to the Indian coast near Tamil Nadu on April 30, it is likely to turn into a severe cyclonic storm. However, even on Friday, weathermen maintained in their forecast that the cyclone will pass near Tamil Nadu but won't make landfall in the state.

In its forecast issued on Friday evening, IMD stated that the depression had moved northwestwards with a speed of about 16 kmph in the afternoon. It was centred around 1,060 kmph east southeast from Trincomalee, Sri Lanka and 1,410 kmph southeast of Chennai and 1,690 kmph south-southeast of Machilipatnam.

The IMD issued warnings for heavy rains and strong winds on Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast on Friday. It said that gusting up to 50 kmph is likely to begin along the two coasts, Comorin area and Gulf of Mannar from Sunday morning. Later, on Sunday night, squally conditions will be seen with wind speed reaching up to 70 kmph. It will rise to 115 kmph along and off north Tamil Nadu and adjoining Andhra Pradesh districts from Tuesday.

While the eastern coast will be witnessing stormy conditions, major regions in the country are going to be gripped by a heat wave in the coming days. IMD said that with no major weather system, such as a western disturbance influencing conditions right now, temperatures will continue to soar. Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Vidarbha and Marathwada are likely to see a heat wave in the coming days.

The region is already recording temperatures above 40 °C on a daily basis. Akola city in Vidarbha recorded maximum temperature of 46.4°C on Friday and was the hottest place in the country. IMD records showed that all major towns and cities in Madhya Pradesh, Marathwada and Vidarbha had temperatures above 42°C.
