The Deoria Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh. The sitting MP from Deoria is BJP's Kalraj Mishra who beat BSP's Niyaj Ahmad Khan by 2.65 lakh votes.

Mishra had announced before the 2019 elections that he would not seek re-election. The BJP then fielded another senior leader Ramapati Ram Tripathi from Deoria. Tripathi was the UP BJP chief during 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

However, the BJP denied ticket to Ramapati Ram's son Sharad Tripathi, the incumbent MP from Sant Kabir Nagar, had created a political storm by beating BJP Mehdawal MLA Rakesh Baghel with shoes, after the two had an argument over taking credit for a newly laid road.

While Sharad has now been dropped from the seat by the BJP which has fielded Praveen Nishad. However, he can seek solace from the fact that the party has given the ticket to his father.

Ramapati Ram Tripathi is facing Binod Kumar Jaiswal of the BSP and Congress' Niyaz Ahmad Khan who contested 2014 election on a BSP ticket.

There are five assembly segments in Deoria Lok Sabha constituency, three of which are in Deoria district while two are in Kushi Nagar district: Deoria, Pathardeva and Rampur Karkhana (Deoria), Tamkuhi Raj and Fazilnagar (Kushi Nagar).

UP is facing a triangular battle between the BJP, the Congress and BSP-SP-RLD alliance. Under the alliance's seat-sharing formula, the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is contesting on 38 Lok Sabha seats of the total 80 seats, Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party on 37 seats and the Chaudhary Ajit Singh's Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) on three seats. The alliance has left two for Congress' Sonia Gandhi (Rae Bareli) and Rahul Gandhi (Amethi).

In the seventh phase of Lok Sabha polling, 13 seats in Uttar Pradesh - Maharajganj, Gorakhpur, Kushi Nagar, Deoria, Bansgaon, Ghosi, Salempur, Ballia, Ghazipur, Chandauli, Varanasi, Mirzapur and Robertsganj - are going for polls. In 2014 election, all of these 13 seats were won by the BJP with Prime Minister Narendra Modi securing his victory from Varanasi.

The counting of votes of the Lok Sabha election 2019 will be conducted on May 23.
