Dengue claims first life in Delhi this season, 325 hit

The Delhi authorities on Monday confirmed the first reported dengue death in the capital this year. Civic officials have identified the deceased as 12-year-old Nitish Kumar, a resident of Safdarjung development area in the city, who died of ‘dengue shock syndrome’ on August 1, 36 hours after he was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

According to the municipal report, 325 people have been affected by the vector-borne disease this monsoon season in Delhi alone.

“The patient was brought to us 4-5 days after he was infected. He had the dengue shock syndrome and his blood pressure was not recordable. There was fluid collection in his chest and abdomen,” said Dr Anil Sachdeva, paediatrician, Sir Gangaram Hospital. 

“Kumar hailed from Bihar,” said South Delhi Mayor, Kamaljeet Sehrawat.

Of the total 657 dengue cases reported this year, 325 have been in Delhi and 332 from other states.
