From loyal BJP leader to arch rival, there has been a strong call for further investigations into the Gopinath Munde's road accident that occurred on Tuesday morning. Munde was en route to Indira Gandhi International airport to take a flight to Mumbai when his car was involved in a collision with another car, an Indica, which had jumped the traffic signal at Aurobindo Chowk.

The circumstances of the death have raise suspicion and speculations of a conspiracy have floated the political space since the accident.

Even though, earlier the BJP Maharashtra had clarified its stand on the issue by stating that the demand for a CBI probe was only from individual leaders and not the collective demand of the party. They termed it “as emotional outburst” by certain leaders. However, there were many strong calls for intensive investigation from across the party's hierarchy.

His sudden demise did come as a big blow to the BJP, especially since the party is preparing to fight the Assembly elections in October 2014.

BJP leaders such as Prakash Anna Shengde and Awadhut Wagh claim that it is impossible that such an accident can just happen, and are calling his accident to be a conspiracy, and have gone to the extent to demand a CBI probe.

In a statement, Wagh said, "Unless an inquiry is done, we won't be satisfied. People think this could be a conspiracy. Although I am not a policeman to decide whether it was an accident, and to inquire on this matter is the job of police, I would just like to add that Mundeji used to travel in a high security vehicle with guards, how come he was in a normal car?" It was not just Munde's comrades, but also his arch rivals who have asked that the accident be probed by the top most investigative body. In rather surprising move, NCP chief Sharad Pawar  asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to initiate a CBI probe into the death of former Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde to bring out the "facts". "It is my view that their demand for CBI probe may be considered and accepted by the government as this would bring out the facts and assuage their feelings," he said in his letter. Read more

Protests were even held in Munde's home town of Beed. As grief gave way to anger, a section of the crowd indulged in stone pelting at the Vaijyanath Co-operative Sugar Factory ground where the funeral took place. Some agitated supporters went on a rampage, with the demand of a probe into union minister's death. The supporters torched police vans, other vehicles and gheraoed Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan's car, while he was on his way to a helipad. Read more

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the other hand, is believed to be considering these demands for the CBI probe. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari today said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will decide the course of action on the matter. "Yesterday, I spoke to the Prime Minister and Munde's family. It is the Prime Minister who will decide the proper course of action on the matter and truth will prevail," he stated. Read more
