AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal has reportedly withdrawn an application for transfer of address in voter identity card after an NGO approached Election Commission, saying he is a resident of Ghaziabad and his request should not be entertained.

Status of Kejriwal's application (no: 467402) for transfer of address was shown as "rejected" on the website of Delhi's Chief Electoral Office citing it was "withdrawn".

According to the website, the former Delhi Chief Minister had applied for change of address on November 17 last year and it was disposed of on January 9. Kejriwal had vacated his official residence on Tilak Lane in July last year and shifted to his earlier residence at Kaushambi in Ghaziabad.

As per Section 5 (C) of Representation of People Act 1951, a candidate should be an elector of any assembly seat of the particular state from where he or she wants to contest.

A senior Delhi Election Commission official said any prospective candidate can apply for change in existing address or apply for fresh voter card from any assembly constituency even two/three days prior to filing of nomination.

When contacted, an AAP spokesperson said Kejriwal had applied for change of address from earlier Tilak Lane residence to 514 Vitthalbhai Patel House at Rafi Marg but claimed it has not been withdrawn.

"Yes, Arvind (Kejriwal) had applied for change of address. He has not withdrawn any application and we also have not received any information on this yet from the Election Commission," party spokesperson Atishi Marlena said.

The NGO Maulik Bharat Trust alleged that Kejriwal withdrew the application after it approached the Election Commission.

"How can he apply for change in address in voter identity card to VP House in New Delhi when he is a resident of Ghaziabad," Rahul Raj Malik of the NGO asked.

Kejriwal had given 41 Bungalow, Hanuman Road in Central Delhi as his residential address in his nomination for assembly election in December 2013.
