With no headway being made in the Sunanda Pushkar murder probe for over two years, Delhi Police has now turned to the Enforcement Directorate, asking them to investigate financial irregularities in the setting up of the IPL Kochi team. This, they believe, will help unravel the mystery.

Pushkar owned around 19 percent shares in the IPL Kochi Tuskers team which was terminated by the BCCI in 2011 for breaching its terms of agreement. A letter, written on October 3 by the Joint Commissioner of Police (South-Eastern Range) RP Upadhaya to the ED, states that the financial irregularities in the IPL Kochi team should be investigated with regard to the Foreign Exchange Management Act (2002) regulations. The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police was earlier investigating this, when BS Bassi was the Delhi Commissioner of Police. The EOW was investigating whether Sunanda had any role to play in the ownership pattern, or if someone closed to her had, and if that had any connection with her murder.

In 2010, Tharoor, had to step down as Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs, facing allegations of abusing his official position. Allegations were made that Tharoor had ensured Rs 70 crore – which accounted for 19 percent equity in the IPL Kochi franchise Rendezvous Sports World – was paid to Sunanda Pushkar. Later on, the couple got married.

Amidst controversy in April 2010, she gave up the 19 percent equity owing to the "ownership pattern" issue. Rendezvous Sports World was a member of the consortium that had won the Kochi IPL franchise during the auction. "I am rendering services for Kochi franchise. (I) have advised them in getting IPL. I am also advising them on marketing and branding and hence I am getting sweat equity. It is only on paper now. I have not yet got it," Pushkar had then said in a statement.

Post her death, Delhi Police had also sent her viscera samples to the FBI and had also asked them to submit a final report giving their conclusions.

Sunanda was found dead at the Leela hotel in New Delhi on January 17,2014. This was days after her bitter Twitter spat with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar over the latter's alleged affair with Tharoor. Several persons, including Tharoor, have been questioned in connection with Sunanda's death. The police have also conducted a polygraph test on six persons – all of them were prime witnesses in the case. These include Tharoor's domestic help Narayan Singh, his driver Bajrangi, and Sanjay Dewan, a close friend of the couple.
