Delhi and Mumbai airports, the busiest and largest in the country, also witness the most thefts seen at any of the nation's 13 major airports, together accounting for 80 per cent of the cases reported in roughly the past three-and-a-half years. In the bargain, Delhi far outstrips Mumbai with more than double the incidence of pilfering.
Parsed, the data released by the Ministry of Civil Aviation says that a total of 252 cases of thefts were reported at the 13 airports between 2015 and June 2018. Of these, 204 were reported at Delhi and Mumbai terminals — Delhi alone claiming discredit for 144 of these.
Each of the two airports easily handle more than 900 flights every day. Over last seven years, Delhi's air traffic has almost doubled. Its airport catered to more than 60 million passengers in 2017-18, while Mumbai's flew 48.5 million people last fiscal.
The ministry released the figures in the ongoing Parliament session.
Hyderabad, which takes the third spot on the list of airports unsafe for your baggage, reported 34 theft cases over the same period of time, while Bengaluru airport reported three, bagging a distant fourth rank.
The airports at Kolkata, Lucknow, Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram reported only two cases each since 2015.
Amritsar, Jaipur and Jammu airports saw one each.
Those at Imphal and Calicut did not record any theft, making them the safest.
The ministry stated that a host of measures steps are being taken to minimise the stealings at airports. The steps include frisking ground handling staff before they exit airports, banning use of the staff's cellphones on the air-side, surprise checks, the ministry said.
It also said that according to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), no security personnel were found to have been involved in the reported cases. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and private airport operators also stated that their staff is blameless.
The Delhi International Airport Limited, a GMR-led consortium, operates and maintains the Indira Gandhi International Airport, while the GVK-led Mumbai International Airport Limited operates the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
