Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on Thursday returned the file sent by the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) government for removal of Congress leader and former MLA Barkha Singh from the post of chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW).
He has asked the government led by Arvind Kejriwal for the grounds on which it is asking for Barkha Singh’s removal and reconstitution of DCW. Sources in AAP government told dna that they will clarify to Jung grounds on which they are seeking Barkha Singh’s removal. “Delhi government is well within its rights to seek her removal as DCW has only politicised the issue of Bharti. She is a former Congress MLA. She can not continue at that post. There cannot be an unbiased probe into the case till she continues as DCW chief,” sources said.
To support their point the sources said even governors who are appointed in states on recommendation of a particular government at the centre are sometimes changed even before their term ends by the new government led by a different party.
“We have no problem with the DCW investigating into the complaints against Bharti but we want an unbiased probe and not a politically motivated one which is happening right now,” sources added.
Kejriwal’s government had recommended to Jung name of eminent social worker and novelist Maitreyi Pushpa for the post of DCW chairperson.
AAP’s government and DCW have been at loggerheads ever since DCW flexed its muscles and issued notice to Delhi’s law minister Somnath Bharti over alleged harassment and misbehaviour charges against him by Ugandan and African women during the infamous midnight raid in Khriki extension.
The controversy between the two sides has been escalating since then. While AAP charges former MLA Barkha Singh led DCW of politicising the whole issue, the women’s panel accused Bharti of disrespecting the panel by ignoring the summons sent to him. The tension has only escalated between the two sides since then.
After AAP government’s file had reached the LG, Barkha Singh met Jung to explain her position. Later, Jung returned the file to Delhi government asking for grounds on which they are seeking Singh’s removal.
Meanwhile, Barkha Singh has stated that she will not take her removal lightly if that happens.
