A 38-year-old lawyer was bludgeoned to death allegedly by the in-charge of an eatery near the Tis Hazari court in north Delhi last night following an argument over the food served at the unit.

The accused, identified as Dhanna Ram Chaudhary (49), was arrested within hours after the body of Rajeev Sharma was discovered early morning. Police had earlier detained another person in this connection but he was released after he was found clean.

"Sharma had visited the eatery around 10:45 PM and an argument had broken out between him and Dhanna over the quality of the food served. During the scuffle, the accused, who was in an inebriated state, allegedly hit Sharma on his head with a heavy brass casting used to grind spices," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma.

"When Sharma collapsed on the ground, Dhanna Ram fled the scene. Soon, the other employees also shut the eatery leaving Sharma's body lying in a pool of blood. Dhanna Ram was booked under Section 302 (murder) and arrested on Friday afternoon," he added.

The victim originally hailed from Himachal Pradesh and lived at a rented accommodation in Rohini in northwest Delhi.

There were wounds on his head which were caused by the blunt object. Soon after the body was found around 7 AM, investigators rounded up four employees of the eatery and subjected them to sustained interrogation.

The police also found blood stains on the stairs of the eatery, suggesting that Sharma's body was dragged out of the eatery and dumped on the street. Also, when the body was discovered, the arms and legs were folded inward.

Dhanna Ram, a resident of Jodhpur in Rajasthan, was working at the eatery for the past few years. In Delhi, he lives at a rented accommodation in north Delhi's Sant Nagar Burari. Meanwhile, lawyers of all six district courts abstained from work following the incident.

"A young advocate's body has been found in the court complex and he has been murdered. This is a serious issue. We are yet to know what he was doing here late night. All the lawyers have decided to abstain from work today," advocate Sanjeev Nasiar, President of Tis Hazari Bar Association said.
