Delhi: ITBP personnel thrashed during sealing drive

The official action was being carried out following an order by the National Green Tribunal to shut down 850 polluting factories.

An Indo Tibetan Border Police personnel was brutally beaten by a gang of five men in New Delhi’s Mayapuri area on Saturday during a sealing drive. At least 13 officials were injured after locals targeted them with stones, said the police.

The official action was being carried out following an order by the National Green Tribunal to shut down 850 polluting factories.

A viral video of the attack showed the ITBP personnel being attacked with shoes and bare hands, causing his gun to fall. He was saved by some locals. In other videos of the incident, several protesters can be seen pelting stones at forces, who in turn, responded with stones and bricks.

“We have registered a case and are checking the CCTV footage and videos which have gone viral to arrest those behind the attack. The injured officials are being treated, while we are unaware of the civilians injured in the clash,” said a senior police officer.

Following the incident, three teams of Delhi police, two teams of ITBP have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order. Police said the situation was under control. 

Earlier, the National Green Tribunal had slammed the Delhi government for not taking action against illegal scrap industries in Mayapuri that are causing pollution.
