Delhi government to formulate disaster management plans

In order to brace itself for any future disaster in the national capital, Delhi government will formulate state disaster management plans (SDMP) and district disaster management plans (DDMPs).

Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) are in the process to formulate these two plans with its officials today discussing contents of the draft plan and highlighting the difficulties.
As part of this exercise, a one-day workshop for review of draft SDMP and DDMPs was today organised wherin experts suggested some points to improve these plans.

In the workshop, officials from DDMA, and all the districts, representatives of various departments (Emergency Support Functionaries such as Delhi Police, Fire Service, DTC, CATS, Major hospitals) and experts form National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) and Indian Red Cross Society.

During the programme, district magistrates of all the eleven revenue districts of the national capital also gave presentations on their District Disaster Management Plans.

"In the workshop, experts were of the view that there is a need to implement Incident Response System formulated by NDMA at various levels and there is also a need for inter-agency dialogue to arrive at smooth coordination.

"All the experts emphasized for training and capacity building of all the stakeholders as these would enable them to respond to emergencies effectively," said a senior government official.
The official also said that experts also emphasized the need for vulnerability and resource mapping for various hazards throughout Delhi, which would require surveys involving stakeholder Departments.
