A minor fire broke out at the ground floor of the crowded Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on Wednesday, but was soon brought under control and no major damage or casualty occurred. The fire broke out in a meter box near casualty ward of the hospital this evening.

"A call of fire at MCB box containing electricity wire and meter, near casualty ward of the hospital on ground floor was reported around 4.15 PM. Four fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire was controlled within a few minutes," said Atul Garg, Chief Fire Officer, Delhi Fire Service.

Although the fire was not major, smoke emitted due to burning of wire and electrical fitting in the meter box caused panic among patients, their attendants and hospital staff. The cause of the fire was under investigation but it was suspected that the blaze broke due to overheating of the electrical wire, police said.
