Delhi Court declares Vijay Mallya a proclaimed offender

A Delhi court on Thursday declared businessman and liquor baron Vijay Mallya as absconding and proclaimed offender after he failed to appear in the court despite several summons. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Sehrawat held that Mallya had evaded summons in a FERA violation case.

The businessman has been in the UK since March 2016 and is wanted on charges relating to his defunct Kingfisher Airlines defaulting on loans amounting to Rs 9,000 crore.

"Keeping in view submissions made, and the fact that the accused failed to appear before this Court despite lapse of more than 30 days and no representation has been made on his behalf, accordingly, accused Mallya is declared as proclaimed offender," the judge said.
