Delhi cops seize 50 pistols, 100 magazines from suspect

Announcing the news at a press conference held at the Delhi Police Headquarters, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav revealed the modus operandi and the details of the investigation.

The special cell of the Delhi Police arrested 33-year-old Savinder Kumar with 50 sophisticated pistols of .32 bore with 100 magazines on Tuesday. Slated as the biggest illegal arms haul in the recent past, the accused was arrested from Central Delhi's Sarai Kale Khan area after the cops intercepted a cherry red car laden with the ammunition. The accused Kumar was produced in the district courts today and has been remanded to police custody for 12 days.

Announcing the news at a press conference held at the Delhi Police Headquarters, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav revealed the modus operandi and the details of the investigation. "It has emerged out as the biggest haul of illegal pistols in the capital in the recent past," Yadav said. He went on to add that, "The arrest came on the heels of tip-off received by an informer about the large network of illegal weapons having roots in Bihar and operating in National Capital Region (NCR), Delhi and adjoining areas of UP."

The arms being trafficked were meant for criminals in Delhi and National Capital Region.

Kumar who hails from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh belonged to a family of farmers and during the interrogation claimed that he had been supplying illegal arms since the past 18 months. Kumar used to source his weapons from Dhanbad, Jharkand and in the past month, he had opened an assembly and manufacturing unit of his own. Kumar claims to have completed six assignments in and around the NCR area and delivered around 400 high quality semi-automatic pistols. To ferry his consignments he had bought himself a chery red Chevrolet Aveo and had customized the boot of the car to contain a cavity in which he could hide the weapons.

A case under the Arms Act has been registered against him at the Special Cell Police Station. Kumar also has an attempt to murder case registered against him in Meerut.
