Delhi Police were overjoyed as their bid to rescue an abducted five-year-old paid off. In a dramatic search and rescue operation, Delhi Police's Crime Branch barged into a house in Sahibabad at around 1 am on Tuesday morning, post a few rounds of to-and-fro firing. Police officers shot dead one of the kidnappers, while another was injured, but most importantly, five-year-old Vivan was saved.

It had been a harrowing 12 days for the five-year-old. A day before the Republic Day, when the child was abducted from his school bus located near the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) on Mandoli Road in Shahadra, when the driver of the bus tried to rescue the child, he was shot.

The kidnapping may have been dramatic, but the rescue bid was perhaps even more so. Police sources reveal how the recovery of the child unfolded during the early hours of Tuesday. "We zeroed in on one of the accused on Monday, identified as Nitin Sharma in New Seemapuri area. The police team started tailing Nitin. Following more than an hour's chase, he was finally nabbed," said RP Upadhyay, Special Commissioner of Police, Crime.

Upon questioning by Joint Commissioner of Police, Alok Kumar, Nitin disclosed that his aides Ravi and Pankaj had the child in their custody at Flat number B-505, Ebony, ShalimarCity, near Bhopra in Sahibabad, Ghaziabad. He also told the police that they were armed.

"Accordingly, the police team conducted a raid at around 12:50 am on Tuesday and rang the doorbell of the fifth floor where the identified flat was. The entrance had an iron gate and then a wooden door. Upon knocking, one person from inside partially opened the wooden door, while the other person stood behind him. When the police asked them to open the gate further and release the child, they immediately opened fire at the police," said Kumar.

"In retaliation, the police also fired and forced their entry into the flat. While one kidnapper was found unconscious, another was injured. The child was recovered from a room next to the main hall where the encounter took place. He had hiding himself under a bed," Kumar said.
