In a shocking incident a traffic police head constable was arrested after he was recorded on a mobile camera attacking a woman with a brick in New Delhi's Mathura Road on Monday afternoon. Interestingly, Monday's incident took place exactly a week after a traffic police meeting in which constables guarding the streets of Delhi were directed to be 'cool and polite' while dealing with the public.

The entire incident was captured on camera by a person in a car, which had halted right in front of where the cop was beating up the woman. In the video clip, which went viral, the head constable, identified as Satish Chandra (46), was seen twisting the woman's arm and then throwing a brick at her in the presence of her daughters whom she had picked from school in the same area.

The woman, identified as Ramanjit Kaur, was rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, where she was reportedly treated for a fracture in her left arm.

Moments after the video was circulated in the media as well as social media, Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi himself came forward and said that Chandra had been suspended and also directed police in the concerned district to register a criminal complaint against Chandra.

The injured woman later got her complaint registered at the Tughlaq Road police station and the erring police official was arrested under relevant sections of the IPC.

During her interaction with the media, the woman said that the incident occurred when she refused to pay a bribe to the cop allegedly, who asked her for Rs 200 and forcefully pulled her off her scooter.

A senior police officer maintained that there was no justification for the acts committed by the police officer and said that the woman was riding a scooter with her daughters and was stopped by the head constable when she allegedly jumped a red light.

When she was asked to produce her drivers' licence, she showed a photocopy of her licence from her bag, which the cop refused to accept. This led to a scuffle between them and the woman allegedly hurled a stone at the cop, which hit his motorbike.

“This is an extremely disgraceful incident. We try our best to sensitise our personmel to behave properly with the public and when incidents like these happen it puts the entire police force to shame,” said Muktesh Chander, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic). Later in the evening, Chander said that Satish Chandra had been dismissed from his services.
