On Sunday evening, a group of protesters on a candle light march were detained by police for breaking Section 144 in Delhi. Among the detainees were children as young as 5-6 years of age. The locals were protesting against the recent alleged sexual assault of a two and half year old child by a school peon in a play school.

The protesters had assembled at Kendriya Sachivalya (Central Secretariat) Gate 2. But police officals asked them to use the route going towards Jantar Mantar.

The protesters then carried out the march at around 6:00pm under police scrutiny. However it was abruptly stopped as a police vehicle approached them and took them to Parliament Street police station and detained them there.

The police officials said that since the area was covered under Section 144, it was unlawful to carry out a march there. However, when it was pointed out that it was police officials themselves who took the protesters to the area, DCP Tyagi apparently spoke in an abusive manner and cancelled their permit to hold the march. The police also detained the iamin reporter Kamal Pant.

On September 26, it was reported that a two and half year old was sexually assualted by the peon of her playschool. The school management impeded efforts to lodge an FIR and blamed the protestors of tarnishing its reputation.

The protesters mostly belonged to the Pratigya group and supporters of the family of the sexual assault survivor.

The protesters and the journalist have been detained for over three hours so far and yet to be released.

Update: The protesters and the journalist were released at 10.00 pm as the Metro was about to close down for the day.
