Delhi accounts for 85% of fake notes seized in country

In all there have been 227 FIRs and 145 people arrested in connection with fake notes of the new currency, the Ministry of Home Affairs stated in reply to a Parliament question on Tuesday.

Even nine months after demonetization fake notes of 500 and 1000 denomination that went out of circulation in November continue to be circulated.

Delhi has turned out to be the hub of fake notes after demonetization accounting for 85 per cent of total seizures in the country. Investigating agencies have seized fake notes worth Rs 5.8 crore out of the total of Rs 6.86 since demonistisaiton in November.

In all there have been 227 FIRs and 145 people arrested in connection with fake notes of the new currency, the Ministry of Home Affairs stated in reply to a Parliament question on Tuesday.

With 34 cases registered the number of FIRs was also highest in Delhi.

The total number of notes is 47,700—this includes 41,991 of 500 denomination and 89,691 of 1000.

Gujarat comes second with 34 cases with notes worth over 90 lakh being seized in the state.

Notably there were no cases registered in Bihar, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Orissa, Sikkim, Tripura, Telangana, Uttarakhand and West Bengal. Some union territories also recorded no seizures of fake demonitised currency.

However, the government maintained there was a "significant positive impact" of demonetization on most of the "theatres of violence" in the country.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said that since illegally held cash formed a major chunk of terror funding, after the Centre's decision to scrap the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes in

November last, most of the cash held by terrorists became worthless.

"demonetization also led to an instant extinguishment of Pakistan-printed high-quality fake Indian currency notes. It also adversely affected the hawala operators," said Ahir.
