The Delhi government on Thursday lifted nine samples of various instant noodles brands from different areas in the city and sent them for laboratory testing, a day after it banned Maggi in the national capital for 15 days.

Besides banning the sale of the popular snack the city government on Wednesday had also asked the Indian arm of Swiss manufacturer Nestle to withdraw its existing stock.

Government's Department of Food Safety lifted the nine samples from various brands of instant noodles which have been sent for laboratory testing.

"These nine samples of instant noodles have been sent to central government's accredited and approved labs and their reports are expected shortly," a senior government official said.

After Delhi, four more states -- Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand today -- banned the sale of Maggi as it came under mounting scrutiny over food safety concerns.

The decision to ban sale of Maggi with immediate effect came after Delhi Health Department was not satisfied with explanation of Nestle India on authorities finding "lead beyond permissible limit" in the noodle samples lifted from across the city.

"Government has put a ban on Maggi noodles for 15 days. We have asked Nestle India to withdraw Maggi stocks within 15 days. We will carry out lab testing of fresh stocks and a decision will be taken thereafter," Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain told reporters on Wednesday.

Jain said government would file a case against Nestle India in court as per provisions of the Food Adulteration Act and will "not compromise" on issues relating to health safety.

He had also said that government would also carry out laboratory testing of all other noodles brands available in the city and will take action based on the reports.
