Several students who are set to appear for the National Eligibility Test(NET) exam conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) are left in a lurch as the Board is yet to send a notification for the July exam. Every year, approximately five lakh students appear for the exam.

The Board has been conducting the exam in two sessions — one in January and another one in July —since 2014. Qualifying the exam is an essential pre-requisite for students aspiring to apply for the post of Assistant Professors across universities and colleges in the country. Students also get their Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) for their doctoral work after qualifying the exam.

In the last two years, the CBSE has released the notification for the July exam in the first week of April. However, the delay in releasing the notification this year has worried students. “A lot of us have been preparing for the July NET exam for the last few months. However in the absence of a notification, there is no clarity about the exams and we are all worried that the CBSE might scrap the second round of exams,” said an aspirant from the University of Mumbai.

The first round of NET was conducted in January 2017. The CBSE chairperson RK Chaturvedi, in 2016, had expressed that conducting large scale exams like the NET puts an extraneous burden on the already busy Board.

Students said that in this backdrop, they are scared that the CBSE might scrap the second round of exams and hold only one round every year to reduce its burden. “The NET exam is a very competitive one, and most students have to give multiple attempts to qualify the exam. If it is held only once a year, students would end up losing an entire year,” said Nilesh Kharat, an aspirant from Pune.
