The Jain community in Bengaluru lodged a complaint with police against some alleged pro-Kannada activist for their misconduct and hurting religious sentiment.

The incident took place on Saturday evening at infantry road when some alleged activists forcefully ransacked posters written in the Hindi language on the entrance of a Jain prayer hall. Complainants also alleged that the posters of religious gurus were also damaged.

Reacting, BJP MP from Bangalore South Tejasvi Surya wrote that he was ‘deeply hurt by the attack’.

He wrote: “Deeply hurt over attack on our Jain brothers in B'luru over हिन्दी on a banner of a temple by few rowdy elements. They however never question use of عربى (Arabic)  in Bengaluru. Assaulting peaceful Jains who contribute to Karnataka brings infamy to genuine Kannada lovers & activists. Many great poets like Pampa, Ponna & Ranna known as Ratnatraya or three gems of Kannada literature were Jains. Very beginning of Kannada literature is Jaina Yuga. Therefore, I urge today's young Jains in Karnataka to learn this history & also use Kannada in their communications.”

The Jain community later jointly reported the matter to the police and lodged a formal complaint.

Following the complaint, the DCP visited the incident site and assured action against all the accused. The alleged incident was duly recorded and uploaded on the social media site Facebook.

The video which was uploaded on social media was also provided to the police by the Jain community as evidence of the incident.

In the video, one can witness that few miscreants at Ganesh Bagh — Jain Prayer Hall — on Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Road (Infantry Road) created ruckus at the entrance of the prayer hall and damaged posters which were in the Hindi language.

An investigation is being carried out in the alleged incident.
