The Supreme Court on Monday announced that a decision on the elevation of Justice Akil Kureshi has been taken and the same shall be soon uploaded in the public domain.

The Collegium, comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justices SA Bobde and NV Ramana, had held several sittings after its initial recommendation of May 10 to elevate Justice Kureshi – presently a judge with the Bombay High Court – that was returned for reconsideration by Centre on August 27. The matter was taken up by the apex court on a petition filed by Gujarat High Court Advocates Association, who blamed the Centre for delaying its decision on Justice Kureshi.

Though it has not been known whether the Collegium will reiterate its recommendation or change its decision, a bench listed the petition for hearing on September 23, assuring that the decision taken by the Collegium will be soon uploaded on the SC website.

Speculation was rife that the Centre had shown its disagreement over Justice Kureshi taking over as Chief Justice of a big HC such as in Madhya Pradesh. The Gujarat High Court Advocates Association claimed that the delay to appoint Justice Kureshi as CJ of MP High Court had to do with past orders by him.
