After hit by the impact of demonetisation, a textile businessman killed four of his family members and attempted suicide at his home near Pallavaram here on Tuesday. The businessman was troubled by growing debts.

Police said debts and a huge loss in business forced Damodharan, a resident of Thiruvalluvar Nagar in Pammal, to take the extreme step.

Damodharan murdered his mother Saraswathi, wife Deepa, son Roshan and daughter Meenakshi by slitting their throats with a kitchen knife. Later, he tried to commit suicide by slitting his own throat.

Damodharan, who runs Prakash Cloth Store has left two letters detailing the reasons for his decision kill his family members and himself. In a letter to his friend S Balakrishnan, Damodharan said that after the centre brought the demonetisation, there was no growth in the textile sector. "With the price rise, I was living taking more and more loans. Only my debts increased but the textile sales did not go up. If the situation continues like this, many lives will be lost like mine. But the state government is not bothered about all this," he wrote in the letter recovered by the police from his house.

According to the police, on hearing loud noise from his house, neighbours reached there and found four dead bodies. They found Damodharan alive and rushed him to Government General Hospital. The local police reached the spot and recovered the dead bodies after the neighbours informed them. The police have registered a murder case against Damodharan.
