In a shocking incident that seems like it's out of an Agatha Christie novel, a Kanpur-based businessman’s body was found on the Patna-Kota Express. According to a report in News 18, Sanjay Kumar Agarwal’s body was recovered from the toilet of S1 coach in Patna’s railway station 72 hours after he caught the train in Kanpur.

Sanjay Kumar Agarwal boarded the train on May 24 around 6 AM. Around 7:30 AM he told his wife he wasn’t feeling well. After that his wife couldn’t reach him on his phone which said that it was ‘switched off’.

It’s quite astonishing that his body traversed the distance of almost 1500 km without anyone noticing. The late businessman was slated to get off in Agra, but his body was finally discovered in Patna.

According to the Government Railway Police, he suffered a heart attack and died in the toilet. According to a Govt Railway Police (GRP) investigative officer, Sanjay could have gone to the bathroom after hanging up on his wife, where he suffered a heart attack and died.

The body covered 1500 km without being noticed by passengers, railway staff or even the security.  Even though his wife raised a complaint when her husband didn’t get off at his designated stop – Agra, no one checked. The body was only discovered when the train was sent to the yard for cleaning when the staff discovered the stench from the toilet.

The police recovered money and ID from his dead body which helped them identify him. Rajesh Kuma, CPRO of East Central Railways called it an ‘unusual case’, and the Railways is waiting for the investigation to be completed.

The CPRO also stated that they took longer to find the body because the victim’s wife had given the wrong train number and the victim didn’t have a reservation and bought a current ticket which made him harder to track.

However, he admitted: “But it is very unusual that the body lay in the train toilet for almost 1,500 kilometres and no passenger complained that the toilet door was locked from inside.”

Even Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie's brilliant protagonist, will have a hard time solving this one.
