After a 45-year-old murder convict Harshal Raote on Friday committed suicide after jumping from the fifth floor of Mantralaya, the state government on Monday has woke up and has started providing for safety nets to cover the central atrium of the Mantralaya building.

The public works department started the work of installing nets on Monday, An official informed that the work would be completed by Wednesday. The work would pick up the pace on Tuesday as it is a government holiday for Mahashivratri festival.

The white coloured nylon net was being installed on the second floor of the building, under which a green sheet which resembles shed net for the greenhouse would be loosely tied so that if a person falls down can be saved without any injury.

The PWD official informed that since th Mantralaya has 7 floors, as a part of safety measure this floating net is being installed at the second floor. Officials told that the spate of suicides had prompted the government to take his step, and the police have been writing to the government for the last several months and the Raote incident on February 8 prompted the government to install nets. The work of installing the nets will be completed by Wednesday.

The safety net, installed on Monday, is similar to the one seen commonly at construction sites of high-rise buildings.  Last month saw three separate suicide attempts in and around Mantralaya, in which two people died.

Opposition criticised the state government and their apathy towards the common people leading all of them to crowd Mantralaya and called Mantralaya as a suicide point. Besides installing nets, the visible police presence was seen in Mantralaya on Monday, each of the floors and lobbies is manned by police personnel in uniforms and civil clothes. Any visitors waiting without any work in the lobby or within the premise of Mantralaya are being approached by these police personnel. For the security of Mantralaya, new administration building and state’s guesthouse Sahayadri there are in all 175 police personnel including 25 officers while the demand is for 400.

Following the attempt to suicides, 20 more personnel have been loaned to the state.  Two years ago when similar incidents were reported in Mantralaya, 100 additional personnel were loaned to the state, however over months they were sent back to their original postings.

Senior officials said that they are also planning to get metal grills fixed on windows on the annex side of the Mantralaya building, after a farmer jumped on the seventh floor and attempted to jump off from there. In addition to safety nets, boom barriers, bollards and camera aided intrusion detection system would be deployed soon at Mantralaya.
