Shopian Encounter: Major success for security forces, 5 terrorists killed in overnight operation

Four more terrorists were gunned down in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district on Saturday. With these deaths, the number of terrorists killed in the overnight operation reached five.

Security forces had killed one terrorist in the encounter in Killora area of Shopian where a fierce gunbattle between security forces and terrorists began on Friday. The slain terrorist was identified as Lashkar-e-Toiba's Umar Malik. An AK-47 was recovered from him.

Fresh firing was heard at the encounter site on Saturday morning and death of four more terrorists was confirmed. 

"Four more terrorists have been killed in the operation at Kiloora in Shopian. One terrorist was killed last night," an Army official said, adding the operation was still going on.

An army official said on Friday that the security forces cordoned off the area of south Kashmir following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists and started a search operation there.

The search operation turned into an encounter after the terrorists fired upon the security forces party, he said.

In another gunbattle, two terrorists were killed in Baramulla district on Friday morning. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in village Dursoo in Rafiabad area of Baramulla district following information about the presence of terrorists, a police official said.

He said the search operation turned into an encounter after militants opened firing towards security forces.

Two militants were killed in the encounter, the official said, adding they were identified as Riyaz Ahmed Dar, a resident of Naseer Abad Chinkipora Sopore and Khursheed Ahmed Malik, a resident of Aarihal Pulwama.

The slain terrorists were affiliated with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit, he said.

An Army Jawan, Sawar Vijay Kumar, also lost his life in the gunbattle, the official said.
