Day after massive Bharat Bandh protests, the situation remained tense in Rajasthan after angry mob set ablaze houses of a current MLA and an ex-lawmaker in Hindaun town on Tuesday.

Houses of BJP MLA Rajkumari Jatav and former minister Bharosi Lal Jatav were set on fire in the town that comes under Karauli district. Additional forces were called in to contain the situation.

Matters came to a head when local residents under the banner of sarv samaj (all communities), ignoring the curfew, came out on roads to protest against the violence and loot that took place during Bharat Bandh.

The agitated people were demanding arrests of the persons who had spread violence and looted shops on Monday during the bandh by SC/ ST communities. They took out a rally that the police tried to stop. The group clashed with police that resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas shelling. The police also resorted to firing rubber bullets. Tear gas shells also fell on a school after which over two dozen students fell ill and had to be rushed to hospital for treatment.

According to Dharmendra Gera, a local trader, “Food was prepared for 20,000 people who came for the protest rally. They moved to the city from several areas. Police and administration took no action to check them when they indulged in violence and burnt shops and vehicles. All we wanted to do was to give a memorandum to the police, but police attacked us.”

The angry protesters then want on rampage setting several places across the city on fire. They set on fire the houses of MLA Rajkumari Jatav and former minister Bharosi Lal Jatav.

The Collector announced a curfew in Hindaun City and has called for additional forces. The Rapid Action Force has been deployed but the police is struggling to control the situation.

Situation in Hindaun City continues to be tense but largely under control. But what comes forth is absolute lack of intelligence feedback and unpreparedness on the part of the police on both Monday and Tuesday.

Several cities across the state on Tuesday observed bandh by traders to protest against the loot and arson during the bandh. These include Neem ka Thana, Khetri, Churu, Bharatpur and Bhusawar.

Curfew continues in Jaitaran and Hindaun City on the second day. Internet services remained suspended in Sikar, Karauli, Bikaner, Dhaulpur, Sawai Madhopur, Bharatpur and Dungarpur.

According to Rajasthan DGP OP Galhotra, “Police has taken out flag march in places that had faced violence on Monday. According to the police 172 cases have been registered and around 1,000 people have been arrested. Cases are also being registered where people are coming forward with complaints.”

However, Rajasthan home minister says teh situation is peaceful in the state. Home minister Gulab Chand Kataria speaking to the media said, “Apart from a few instances, the state is largely peaceful. There have been counter protests in some districts. Action will be taken against the guilty. Losses are yet to be evaluated.”

Family of man killed in bandh demand govt job
