The Thane police in Maharashtra state on Tuesday said that they are probing a role of local politicians including corporators after Iqbal Kaskar was arrested in connection with an investigation into an extortion case.

Iqbal Kaskar, the brother of fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim, was arrested by the crime branch of the Thane Police.

Iqbal was taken into custody from his sister Haseena Parker's house in Central Mumbai by a team led by encounter specialist and the anti-extortion cell's senior police inspector Pradeep Sharma.

Speaking to media, Police Commissioner Parambir Singh said, "Three people have been arrested and three people are being questioned. Whether Dawood Ibrahim had an indirect or direct involvement in this extortion racket will be probed."

Stating that some politicians including Corporators could be involved, Singh said that they are investigating the links.

"Threats were given in the name of Dawood. Sometimes shooters were brought from outside, and some people were brought from Bihar to forcibly evacuate properties," Singh said

Some extortion calls were reportedly made in Iqbal's name to a Thane-based businessman. The businessman then approached the Anti-Extortion Cell of Thane Police with a complaint.

Iqbal, who was deported from the United Arab Emirates in 2003, is said to be operating his brother's real estate business in the city, the police said.

He was wanted in a murder case and the Sara Sahara illegal construction case. However, he was acquitted in both the cases in 2007.

Sharma, who led the team that detained Kaskar, was suspended in Lakhan Bhaiya encounter case and was recently reinstated in the police force.
