Daulat Beg Oldi Road is ready at the height of about 13 thousand to 16 thousand feet near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) from China on the Himalaya peaks. Amid all the obstacles, the Border Roads Organization (BRO) has almost completed this 255-km long road construction. Rapid work on this road and many other projects are now in the final stages.

Yes, the road construction with which the deadlock started with China on the Line of Actual Control is now almost ready. The decision to build a road up to Daulatbeg Oldi (DBO) was unanimous from the beginning. However, China had the misconception that India could hardly do this difficult task. India did not stop its work and surprised China by preparing a strategic road to the DBO.

Decision taken in the Atal government, completed in the Modi government

Now only blacktopping is left on this road, which will complete by the end of this month. A 10-km link road to connect the Galvan Valley is also being built at a fast pace.

Road construction to Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO) in eastern Ladakh was one of all priorities, despite the ongoing military standoff with China for five months. Construction of Durbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldi Marg (DS-DBO) is now in the final stages. Apart from this, many other projects related to Ladakh are in progress. The projects started during the Vajpayee government, but the construction pace came up in the Modi government.

On October 3, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated after completing one of these Atal Tunnels. The Neemu-Padma-Darcha road to Leh will also be operational soon, whose construction work is in the final stages of completion. The government has increased the budget by Rs 1,200 crore for strategic roads in the LAC border areas. Many more routes are being built in the border areas of Ladakh.

DBO road is almost parallel to LAC

China had previously felt that India would not be able to make the road to Daulatbeg Oldi (DBO) as it would not be easy to cut mountains and build a strategic route. Still, China was stung when about 80 percent of the road was ready. Construction of the Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldi road is almost complete and expected to be commissioned by the end of this month.

The road is about 255 kilometers long, from Durbuk to the last Indian village of Shyok. The road is almost parallel to the LAC on the Indo-China border, passing through various heights between 13,000 feet and 16,000 feet. This road connects Leh to Karakoram Pass and separates Ladakh from the Xinjiang province of China.

61 strategic locations identified

The India-China war is known for fighting in harsh conditions due to the non-development of roads and bridges in 1962. Here most of the battles are fought at an altitude of more than 4250 meters (14,000 ft) in this one-month war. The Chinese Army occupied the highest peak areas so that it could take advantage of the territory.

After the war, the Indian Army underwent extensive changes and felt the need to be prepared for a similar future conflict. The beginning of the changing Line of Actual Control (LAC) map in East Ladakh started during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government. It is then that constructing strategic roads on LAC by identifying 61 strategic locations were decided. Under this,  to build a road from Kashmir to Daulatbeg Oldi. Decisions were taken to build roads in the Vajpayee government, but roads' pace came in the Modi government.

The Director-General of Border Roads Organization, Lt Gen Harpal Singh, has also said that the DBO road's blacktopping will be completed by the end of this month. A 10-kilometer link road is becoming very fast to connect the Bloody Galvan Valley with the DBO road. With this link road construction, the Indian Army can reach Galvan Valley in just half an hour, which takes about 8 hours.

That is why China is pressuring India to stop the work on this road. Apart from DBO Road, projects are also underway in Demchok and Kargil. Many roads are being built in eastern and western Ladakh. After the inauguration of the Atal tunnel at Rohtang at an altitude of 10,040 feet, there are now plans to expedite the five-kilometer long tunnel near Shinku La Pass, yet it may take three years to complete. This tunnel can be used in all seasons.
