The Opposition on Thursday targeted the Centre on the second anniversary of demonetization, terming it a "dark day" and one of the many "financial scams" of the BJP government.

Main opposition party Congress will stage nationwide protests to mark the second anniversary of demonetization. The party will observe a ‘black-day’ across the country to mark the day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced to scrap Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes two years ago.

On November 8, 2016, Prime Minister Modi had announced the decision to withdraw the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, wiping out a cash of Rs 15 lakh crore from the system. While the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes to replace the old currency, the country was sent in chaos in absence of cash.

The government had claimed that the move was aimed at curbing black money, corruption, fake currency and funding of terror activities.

Opposition parties on Thursday criticised the Modi government over the move two years ago.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee termed the two-year anniversary of the demonetization a "Dark Day".

"#DarkDay Today is the second anniversary of #DeMonetisation disaster. From the moment it was announced I said so. Renowned economists, common people and all experts now all agree," she tweeted.

"#DarkDay The government cheated our nation with this big #DeMonetisation scam. It ruined the economy and the lives of millions. People will punish those who did this," she said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal termed the move a "financial scam" of Modi government.

"Though the list of financial scams of Modi govt is endless, demonetization was a self inflicted deep wound on Indian economy which even two years later remains a mystery why the country was pushed into such a disaster?" the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief said.

According to reports, senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot has written to all party units, asking them to organise protests in front of all RBI offices across the country. Congress President Rahul Gandhi will reportedly lead the protest in Delhi and is likely to be joined by former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and former finance minister P Chidambaram.

Last month, Mr Gandhi had alleged that demonetization was carried out to "convert black money of a few rich people into white" and that Prime Minister Modi was a "magician" who performed this act.

Addressing a public meeting here in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh on October 29, Gandhi alleged, "The exercise was carried out to convert black money of a few rich people into white."

The Congress chief further said, "Kaisa jadugar hai. Kamaal ka jadugar hai. Ameeron ke liye jadu karta hai, (What a magician he (PM) is. Amazing magician. He does magic for rich people)."

He alleged that "Chowkidar ne chori karwa di (The watchman ensured theft)."

Addressing the gathering, Gandhi asked, "When demonetization was announced, did mothers sitting here stand in queues? Did you see any rich person standing in a queue those days. In the initial two-three days people had thought that it was a right exercise but after two three months they realized what happened actually."
