A 24-year-old dalit youth in Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh jumped to death before a train to avoid the wrath of cow vigilantes and social boycott by Panchayat in his village after accidentally killing a calf in his house.

The incident was reported from Gopalpur Barandi village under Ithiatok police station in Gonda district, about 140 kms from Lucknow. Ramu, 24, is a Dalit living with his mother and three brothers in the village.

Ramu on Thursday was busy working with his hammer when a calf kept nudging him. After sometime, Ramu hit the calf with his hammer, injuring its head.

A few villagers who had seen the episode informed village elders. A Panchayat was held regarding this and decided on a social boycott. The Panchayat asked Ramu to leave the village and his house too for a year.

Ramu's mother Kherai, 55, pleaded to the Panchayat saying that Ramu was the one who used to take care of the calf and had no intention of killing it. The elders decided to revisit the issue in their next Panchayat meeting.

However, Ramu was unaware of the next meeting and jumped before a train on Saturday evening.

Village Pradhan Balram Tiwari too claimed that they had called another Panchayat on Sunday to review Ramu's punishment. "We had almost decided to exonerate him from the charge of killing the calf with a bare minimum punishment of one day social boycott and a nominal fine. But before we could do so, he committed suicide," said the Pradhan.

The Ithiatok Police Stataion SHO Ved Prakash Srivastava claimed that It was a suicide.

Ever since Yogi government came to the power in Uttar Pradesh and launched a crackdown against cow slaughtering, such cases are not uncommon. Recently, cow vigilantes thrashed a few Muslim youths in Agra, Meerut, Muzffaranagar and Shamli districts on the pretext of attempting to slaughter cows. Gonda case is first incident in which the victim is a Dalit Hindu and ended his life out of fear of facing social boycott by cow vigilantes.
