Ramendra Naresh has topped in the Master of Computer Application (MCA) program and has been selected for the topper’s Gold medal.
A meritorious dalit student of the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), who topped in the MCA program, has refused to take topper’s Gold medal from the President Ram Nath Kovind during the university’s convocation to be held on December 15 in Lucknow.
Ramendra Naresh has topped in the Master of Computer Application (MCA) program and has been selected for the topper’s Gold medal. But he has refused to take the Gold medal from the President to lodge his protest against spurt in atrocities on dalits in Uttar Pradesh and across country.
After topping the MCA (2013-2016) Ramendra had taken admission in the BBAU in B.Ed in 2017 but was rusticated from the university along with 8 other students in a case involving violent clashes with other students in the campus.
“I am pained at dalit students and faculty members being harassed in state and central universities. Being dalits, we are forced to live in with low self-esteem. Dalits in general are still being treated as low cast and are subjected to mental torture and physical assaults across country,” charged he.
“I am refusing to accept the Gold medal as a mark of protest against dalit atrocities and show solidarity with our brethren,” said Ramendra.
The dalit student said that he will accept the Gold medal only when the President and Prime Minister ensure to check atrocities on dalits and they are treated equally with other castes in the country.
Earlier, three dalit students had showed black flags and raised slogans against the Prime Minister Nadrendra Modi when he had visited the university in 2015 in protest against Rohith Vemula suicide case.
In view of the past incident, the district administration has tightened security in view of President Ram Nath Kovind’s visit following intelligence input that Dalit students might protest during Prez visit on December 15 to distribute medals to meritorious students in the BBAU Convocation.
