A diabetic, the lady Dalit officer was not given water for two and half hours on the instructions of when villagers came to know that she belonged to scheduled caste.
After a row over entry into temple and denial of admission, in yet another case of caste discrimination, a Dalit woman veterinary officer was denied drinking by village head and five others in Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh. They all have been arrested under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on the complaint of the lady doctor.
Dr Seema, a Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer, visited upper-caste donated Ambawa Poorab village in Manjhanpur block on Tuesday. A diabetic, the lady Dalit officer was not given water for two and half hours on the instructions of when villagers came to know that she belonged to scheduled caste.
“There was no water left in the bottle I was carrying. I asked the villagers to get me some water. But the DPRO Ravi Dutt Mishra and BDC S.C.Tiwari gestured towards villagers not to make available water,” alleged Dr Seema.
“Their behavior was abnormal after they came to know about my caste. They refused to offer me any water. When I started dehydrating, I ran out of the village to save my life,” said she.Dr Seema reached Kaushambi Superintendent of Police office and after having water, she narrated her ordeal and lodged a complaint against six persons, including village Pradhan and the BDC.
“We have lodged an FIR under SC/St (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and arrested six people for denying water to the officer on the basis of her caste,” said Pradeep Gupta, SP Kaushambi.
The District Magistrate Kaushambi Manish Verma said that a probe has been ordered and strict action will be initiated against the arrested persons under the law.
