Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi and his brother Shamsher, who passed away last year, were convicted in a 2003 human trafficking case by a Patiala Court in Punjab on Friday and sentenced to two years in jail. However, minutes after the order, Mehndi was granted bail.
“We will appeal in higher court,” the singer, said shortly after the court pronounced its order.
In 2017, Bakshish Singh filed the first complaint against the Mehndi brothers, saying they had taken ‘passage money’ to help him migrate to the US illegally but failed to do so. Soon after, 35 more complainants came forward to level charges of fraud.
It was alleged that Mehndi brothers had taken two troupes in 1998 and 1999 during which 10 people were taken to the US as group members and were “dropped off” illegally.
